Sparse grids and related approximation schemes for higher dimensional problems

چکیده

The efficient numerical treatment of high-dimensional problems is hampered by the curse of dimensionality. We review approximation techniques which overcome this problem to some extent. Here, we focus on methods stemming from Kolmogorov’s theorem, the ANOVA decomposition and the sparse grid approach and discuss their prerequisites and properties. Moreover, we present energy-norm based sparse grids and demonstrate that, for functions with bounded mixed derivatives on the unit hypercube, the associated approximation rate in terms of the involved degrees of freedom shows no dependence on the dimension at all, neither in the approximation order nor in the order constant. 1.

Adaptive Sparse Grids for Hyperbolic Conservation Laws

We report on numerical experiments using adaptive sparse grid dis-cretization techniques for the numerical solution of scalar hyperbolic conservation laws. Sparse grids are an eecient approximation method for functions. Compared to regular, uniform grids of a mesh parameter h contain h ?d points in d dimensions, sparse grids require only h ?1 jloghj d?1 points due to a truncated , tensor-produc...

Efficient Regression for Big Data Problems using Adaptive Sparse Grids

The amount of available data increases rapidly. This trend, often related to as Big Data challenges modern data mining algorithms, requiring new methods that can cope with very large, multi-variate regression problems. A promising approach that can tackle non-linear, higher-dimensional problems is regression using sparse grids. Sparse grids use a multiscale system of grids with basis functions ...

Tensor decomposition in electronic structure calculations on 3D Cartesian grids

Modern problems of physical chemistry lead to computations of many-particle potentials and related integral transforms, involving quantities described by higher-order tensors. Conventional numerical treatment of these problems suffers from the so-called “curse of dimensionality”. Recently developed Tucker and canonical tensor approximation techniques provide structured data-sparse representatio...

Biorthogonal wavelet-based full-approximation schemes for the numerical solution of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication problems

Biorthogonal wavelet-based full-approximation schemes are introduced in this paper for the numerical solution of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication line and point contact problems. The proposed methods give higher accuracy in terms of better convergence with low computational time, which have been demonstrated through the illustrative problems.

Optimal Pareto Parametric Analysis of Two Dimensional Steady-State Heat Conduction Problems by MLPG Method

Numerical solutions obtained by the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method are presented for two dimensional steady-state heat conduction problems. The MLPG method is a truly meshless approach, and neither the nodal connectivity nor the background mesh is required for solving the initial-boundary-value problem. The penalty method is adopted to efficiently enforce the essential boundary co...
